Anna (12K)Name Anna-Marie Guiney
Designation Assistant Project Officer
Host agency UNICEF
Country Ireland

My name is Anna-Marie Guiney and I am from Ireland. I have been working as a UNV Intern with UNICEF Nepal in their water and sanitation section for almost one year now. My main job has been to work closely with a national NGO which has been contracted to carry out training for local NGOs in four districts in Nepal on school water, sanitation and hygiene. As part of this training, NGOs learned about child, gender and differently- abled friendly latrine design as well as modules on life skills education for students and teachers in the schools in relation to hygiene and sanitation. The main purpose of this capacity building has not only been to provide new skills at the local level but to use this learning to influence government and other partners at the national level. This initiative will be a new challenge for the water and sanitation section in UNICEF but one we hope to stand up to.

Anna (12K)Name Heidi Maria Heikkinen
Designation Marketing and Product Development Specialist
Host agency UNDP
Country Finland

I work in a joint project of UNDP and Government of Nepal, Micro-Enterprise Development Project. My project's target group is people living under the Nepalese poverty line, minorities, women and other socially excluded groups. My project does poverty alleviation work by micro-enterprise creation in the rural areas of Nepal. As there are already 40 000 enterprises created, my task is to find solutions, how to help these entrepreneurs to make their businesses sustainable, how to find markets for their products and ways to develop their products' quality for example. The work is very challenging as the entrepreneurs come from very low educational and poor backgrounds and they are located in the remote parts of the country. In addition to linking the entrepreneurs with NGOs and businesses and offering them different kinds of training, I also get to visit the entrepreneurs in their villages and offer them my advice directly. That is the most rewarding part of this work.
